Benefits that actually matter (health, immigration, PTO)
For international students, some benefits are worth more than cash. Health Insurance: Look at the 'Premium' (what you pay monthly) and the 'Deductible' (what you pay before insurance helps). Immigration Support: This is your #1 priority. Does the company pay for your H-1B lawyers? Do they have a policy for sponsoring Green Cards? Ask for this in writing if it's not in the letter. PTO (Paid Time Off): In the U.S., 15–20 days is average.
You shouldn't just show up to work. You need a roadmap.
- Days 1–30 (The Sponge Phase): Your only job is to learn. Meet every person on your team. Learn the tools. Ask "dumb" questions now so you don't have to ask them later.
- Days 31–60 (The Contributor Phase): Start taking small tasks. Fix a bug, write a report, or help a teammate. Your goal is to show you can finish what you start.
- Days 61–90 (The Owner Phase): Identify one small problem the team has ignored and fix it without being asked. This shows you have "initiative."
