When hiring, look for international candidates and refer hard-working students. Build a tribe of successful people who remember you helped them—your long-term safety net.
Your family might think that because you earn dollars, you are rich. They may not realize that a $2,000 rent payment is normal in the U.S.
- Be transparent but firm. Explain the Cost of Living in your city. If you say "Yes" to every financial request, you won't be able to save for your own visa fees or emergencies.
- Communicate your No as a Not Yet. For example: "I can't help with that today, but I am saving up and can help in three months." This protects your relationships and your bank account.
