Professional Networking
Give value before asking
The most important networking 'trick': be a giver, not a taker. Don't ask for a job on first meeting. Send interesting articles: 'I saw this and thought of our talk!' Give genuine compliments on their work. When you eventually ask for a referral, they'll say yes because you've proven you're thoughtful.
Your classmates and fellow interns are not your competition, they are your future coworkers.
- The person sitting next to you today might be a manager at Google in five years. If you help them now, they will help you later. This is called Horizontal Networking.
- Start a small Study Group or Job Search Club with 3-4 friends. Share which companies are hiring and which ones are visa-friendly. Having a small group of people you trust makes the scary job search feel much easier.
