3) Mental Health (The Invisible Weight of Immigration)
Access professional support (know when to get help)
There's no shame in therapy—in fact, it's one of the most American things you can do. Therapists provide talk therapy and coping strategies; Psychiatrists prescribe medication if needed. Most insurance plans cover mental health—check your plan for session limits (some cover unlimited, others cap at 20-30 per year). Finding the right therapist matters: look for someone who understands immigrant experiences. Inclusive Therapists and TherapyDen let you filter for cultural background and immigration awareness. If cost is an issue, teletherapy platforms like BetterHelp and Talkspace are cheaper than in-person, and many employers offer EAP (Employee Assistance Program) with free sessions. Don't wait until you're in crisis. Start therapy when you're feeling 'fine' so you have tools ready when hard times come.
The EPO is a hybrid plan. It is like a PPO in how you use it, but like an HMO in what it costs.
- Like a PPO, you do not need a referral to see a specialist. You have more freedom than an HMO.
- Like an HMO, there is zero coverage for out-of-network care (except for emergencies). You must stay within the network, or you pay the full bill.
- The monthly premiums are usually right in the middle, cheaper than a PPO but more than an HMO.
