Week 1 (Day 0-7): "Get operational"
Open an U.S. bank account (checking)
You can't function without a U.S. bank account. Visit Chase or Bank of America with your Passport, I-20/DS-2019, and proof of address (lease or utility bill). You don't need an SSN yet. Ask for a Student Account if you're under 25—it's free and saves you monthly fees.
-
We will suggest you go with Chase or Bank of America. They are very used to helping international students and new arrivals. They have many branches, so you can always find help nearby.
-
You will need to visit the bank in person. Take your Passport, your I-20 (for students) or DS-2019, and a paper that proves where you live, like your signed lease or a utility bill.
-
You do not need a Social Security Number to open a basic checking account. Just tell the banker you are a new arrival and show them your passport and visa documents.
-
Ask for a "Student Account" if you are under 25. These accounts usually have no monthly fees, which saves you money every month.
