Week 1 (Day 0-7): "Get operational"
Get a U.S. phone number + data plan (SIM/eSIM):
Your first mission: get a working phone number. Without it, you can't verify bank accounts, receive important calls, or navigate safely. Most banks and government systems block VoIP numbers, so you need a real U.S. number via Tello or Mint Mobile eSIM ($15-25/month). This is your lifeline.
Most U.S. banks and government portals (Social Security, DMV) use Short Code SMS for verification. They frequently block VoIP/virtual numbers like Google Voice. So, you’ll first need to secure an eSIM via the Tello or Mint Mobile app.
-
It’ll cost you $15–$25 per month for 10GB+ data.
-
And the requirement is to have an Unlocked phone. (Check: Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock must say "No SIM restrictions").
-
You do not need an SSN or Passport to buy these. Any international credit/debit card works for payment.
