Week 2 (Day 8-14): "Lock housing + cashflow"
Set up utilities (internet, electricity) + renter's insurance
Your apartment is empty and dark. You need to set up utilities (electricity, internet) in your name. Expect to pay a $100-250 deposit as a new customer. Look for 'New Customer' deals from Xfinity or Spectrum for internet. Get renter's insurance through Lemonade ($15-23/month)—most landlords require it, and it protects everything you own.
Utilities are things like lights, heat, and water. You must put these in your name so the power stays on.
- At first you must find out which company serves your city (like ConEd or PG&E) for Electricity. You usually have to call them or use their website. They might ask for a $100–$250 deposit because you are a new customer.
- For the internet, look for "New Customer" deals. Companies like Xfinity or Spectrum often give you a much lower price for the first 12 months.
- You also need Renter’s Insurance. Most landlords require this. It is cheap usually costing between $15 and $23 a month. It protects your clothes, electronics, and furniture if there is a fire or a theft. I recommend using Lemonade because you can set it up on your phone in just a few minutes.
