Build strategic relationships with mentors, sponsors, and peers.
Find mentors and sponsors
You need both: Mentors (coaches who give advice—ask 'Can I learn from you?') and Sponsors (advocates who talk about you in rooms you're not in). You can ask for a mentor, but you earn a sponsor through great work. Also build 'horizontal' networks—your classmates are your future coworkers, not competitors.
Give value before asking
The most important networking 'trick': be a giver, not a taker. Don't ask for a job on first meeting. Send interesting articles: 'I saw this and thought of our talk!' Give genuine compliments on their work. When you eventually ask for a referral, they'll say yes because you've proven you're thoughtful.
Support family abroad sustainably
Set a fixed amount (5-10% of paycheck) instead of sending money whenever asked. Use low-fee apps like Wise or Remitly—save $20 per transfer ($240/year). Be transparent about U.S. cost of living. Say 'Not Yet' instead of 'No': 'I can help in three months.' Protect your visa fees and emergency fund.
